Blended Families

A common part of today’s society is the blended family structured through divorce, separation, or death. Establishing a blended family requires new and redefined roles and boundaries within a family structure.  Children have to readjust especially in the case of shared custody and sometimes need to learn to live in two distinct households. Children may often experience difficulties adjusting to their new stepparent as an authority figure in their life. Additionally, stepparents have to learn to parent stepchildren in a way that supports the biological parent/child relationship while not being rejected by the child.  Husbands and wives are required to establish a new home that is safe and—hopefully—free from rigidity and enmeshment which are often difficulties found in blended families.  Mayfield Counseling utilizes a number of therapeutic approaches to assist our clients learn to navigate the challenges associated with becoming a blended family.
