Parenting

Recent research in the field of child development has provided a fresh look at parenting approaches and skills.  In past generations, parenting focused on correcting children’s behavioral issues while encouraging detached parental emotional behaviors with the hope of teaching self-reliance and responsibility. Today we know that a more positive, proactive approach to parenting encourages positive relational and behavioral skills and enhances emotional intelligence, self-confidence, and empathy for others. Mayfield counselors want to help new parents understand the importance of touch, bonding, and attachment that begins with every child’s birth. The number one way to communicate love to a baby is through touch and soothing words.  As the child develops, continued parental attentiveness is vital to the child’s ability to learn self-acceptance, emotional expression, and boundaries.  Our counselors offer encouragement mixed with a bit of instruction and direction to help parents grow in their attentiveness to their children and learn to enjoy their child’s unique personality and talents. We take joy in seeing the bonds between parents and children strengthen.  Many have found that learning proper communication patterns with their children early, eases the challenges of the teen/adolescent years.  Mayfield Counseling’s goal is to strengthen mental, emotional, and relational resilience and health between parents and their children.
