The vision for Mayfield Counseling Centers was born in an unexpected way. In 2008, Mark Mayfield began the pursuit of his childhood dream of becoming a counselor and professor. In 2010 he received his Master’s Degree in community counseling. By 2014, Mark had been in the counseling field for four years. As a couple, we, Mark and Sarah, had become embedded in the counseling culture and grew to love the intensity of all there was to learn. During that time, I realized my own need for a mentally healthy lifestyle and Mark encouraged me to search for a counselor who would be the right fit for my personal counseling needs.
The first step of realizing that I could not find answers on my own was terrifying and I felt very lost and out of control. I needed someone to walk beside me on the journey of becoming the best version of myself, someone by my side to teach me how to let go of the burdens I did not know I was carrying.
Mark and I researched many promising counselors and made multiple calls. However, each call slowly started to erode my courage. After a two-week waiting period, I finally received one returning call. This frustrating progression of events sparked a question, “What is the current quality and accessibility of counseling in Colorado Springs?” If my experience was typical, then many more people seeking mental health support must be facing a similar disappointment and feeling of defeat. I eventually found a really good counselor. I learned so much about myself in that nine-month time period. Each session I walked away with new tools and resources that encouraged the growth I needed.
Even though I eventually found a great counselor, Mark and I wanted to respond to the need we felt growing in our community for responsive, quality, client-centered counseling. Our belief is that everyone should have access to a counseling experience that is combined with high standards of excellence and holistic care.
After careful planning, Mayfield Counseling opened its doors in July of 2015. We started with five counselors and have since grown to eighteen counselors in under two years. Each of our counselors bring unique life experiences and counseling expertise to our organization. Both therapists and supporting staff work together as a team to provide the best quality care for our clients. We respond to phone calls within 2 to 12 hours of the initial inquiry and ordinarily schedule initial appointments within the same week. Our team strives to provide a safe and welcoming environment for our clients, treating them with dignity and respect as their unique stories unfold.
Throughout 2016 and into 2017, a new awareness of the mental health needs in our community has grown. In response to those needs, Mayfield Counseling re-incorporated into a 501(c)3 non-profit and rebranded as Mayfield Counseling Centers in March of 2017. Our vision is to encourage and empower clients to enjoy life and grow toward their full potential. This vision is coupled with exceptional care as we continue seeking ways to expand our availability and presence in neighborhoods throughout our community.
Currently, Mayfield Counseling Centers are responding to the epidemic of teen and adult suicides by opening a counseling center in the Northgate/Flying Horse area of northern Colorado Springs. This new center is focused on partnering with local schools, churches, and other community organizations to effectively meet this growing need.
To enhance access and availability, Mayfield Counseling Centers North will provide walk-in appointments for teens and their families, as well as a 24/7 consultation hotline.
Our desire is that any person who walks through our doors will find clarity, cultivate hope and deepen their purpose over the course of his or her experience. We stand ready to walk the journey of life with you.
