Horses have the ability to ‘read’ situations and naturally understand people’s intentions, energy, and emotions. Equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) has a therapist partner with horses and a client/s to learn to deal with all kinds of issues. EFP helps clients build skills in the areas of trust, mindfulness, confidence, leadership, teamwork, boundaries, expectations, relationships and many more.
Working with horses gives clients something positive to focus on and discuss with family and friends. EFP clients learn horsemanship skills, form relationships, and enhance confidence. They also build awareness, enhance decision-making skills, and are encouraged to find life meaning. Horses help clients realize that yesterday does not define tomorrow; e.g., if you can lead a 1000+ pound animal, you can likely accomplish a lot in life.
Mayfield Counseling has PATH certified staff (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship), and we partner with PATH sites in Colorado Springs to offer EFP for individuals, groups, or families. Give us a call and see how Mayfield Counseling can help you learn something new while enjoying time with a horse in beautiful Colorado nature.
